The Museum of Decorative Arts, where art comes to life
Published on 5 February 2019, dans Museums / Exhibitions
Housed in a wing of the Louvre Museum, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs offers a fascinating insight into the decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the present day. Located near the Jardin des Tuileries, it is easily accessible from the Hotel Opera Vivaldi.
From the art of yesterday to that of today
Throughout its five thematic departments the museum houses some of the most important collections of decorative art in the world, representing all aspects of the art of living.
Here you can find superb examples of furniture, tableware, carpets, wallpapers, fashion and textiles and even toys, some 150,000 items in all. Shining a spotlight on the artistic culture that seeks to create beautiful things, the collections illustrate a diverse range of crafts and techniques using materials such as gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, glass, ceramics, wood and leather. There is also an insightful focus on advertising and graphic design.
The museum also pays homage to the world’s greatest designers. A recently inaugurated new space honours the talent of the great masters of design.
Exciting temporary exhibitions this year
The exhibition Japon-Japonisme presents more than 1,400 objects that will immerse you in the rich history of Japanese art and design. The 2,200 m2 display space displays a wealth of creativity in different fields such as furniture, tableware, textiles and, of course, calligraphy and painting. This large exhibition dedicated to objects inspired by Japanese art from 1867 to 2018 awaits you until March 3rd, 2019.
A world of childhood wonder can be explored from April 11th to September 8th, 2019 when the museum showcases the work of the French writer and illustrator of children’s literature, Antoon Krings. This exhibition brings together paintings, drawings and other works by the creator of Les Drôles de Petites Bêtes and celebrates 25 years of this series of children’s books featuring the little creatures of his magical garden.
