Impressionism in the spotlight at the Orsay Museum
A palace-like Beaux-Arts former railway station dating from the late 19th century houses the Musée d'Orsay, an incredible temple of culture where you can delight in an astonishing art collection. This museum is internationally renowned for having the world’s largest assemblage of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces (more than 5,000), including such legendary works as Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait and Auguste Renoir's Bal du Moulin de la Galette.
A historically important exhibition until July 21st, 2019
Arriving from New York, the temporary exhibition Black Models; From Géricault to Matisse has taken up residence at the Musée d'Orsay from March 26th to July 21st, 2019. By tracing the story of black models from the abolition of slavery to the discovery of the Harlem Renaissance by Matisse and their physical and symbolic representation by various notable artists, it testifies to the place of people of colour in the development of modern art. This transformation is demonstrated through major works by Manet, Cézanne, Gauguin, Matisse, Géricault and, in the era of photography, by Nadar and Carjat. The exhibition focuses on three key periods revolving around the abolition of slavery, Nouvelle Peinture, and the avant-garde of the 20th century. Haitian-born Jeanne Duval, who inspired Baudelaire, and Laure, Manet's muse as found in the painting Olympia, are among those to which the exhibition pays tribute until July 21st.
